As co-founders of the Institute and owners of Lava Lake Land & Livestock and Lava Lake Lamb, Brian and Kathleen are deeply engaged in biodiversity conservation and sustainable agriculture in the American West.

Kathleen is a former Director of Development for The Nature Conservancy's California program. She served two terms as Board President of Earth Share of California and was for six years an officer and board member of Marin Organic, a non-profit whose mission is to promote sustainable and organic farming. She currently serves on the board of the Wood River Land Trust.
